Ok, I haven’t done a “favorite thing” in a long time, and I can’t think of a better one to kick it off again. I recently connected with Linguacious on Instagram and was definitely interested in their language learning products for kids. When they contacted me about trying them out, I jumped at the chance!
I’m honestly so glad I did, and so grateful to have this amazing opportunity for my kids. I’m a firm believer in engaging our children in learning from other cultures as early as possible, and that includes exposing them to other languages. I took French in elementary school and high school, and then I took Arabic in college. I remember so much more of the French, I believe, because I learned it at a much younger age and so it was more engrained in my memory. I want my children to have similar experiences, as well as learning about all the different beautiful facets of other cultures.
I chose to start with Spanish foods and drinks as my husband speaks some Spanish. The Linguacious founders have been using their cards with their little ones since they were 14 months old, so I was confident my three year-old and twenty month-old would have fun. I was not disappointed. My three year-old daughter giggled and clapped as she listened and repeated every pronunciation. She still struggles with pronouncing some consonants, such as ‘R’ and ‘L’, but she was increasingly confident and excited with each new word.
Curious about how these flash cards are different from all the others? Here’s how they work:
Every card has an image on one side and a word on the other. The words are in whatever language you are working on, and are the appropriate term for the image on the reverse side. There are also QR codes on both sides that link to an app designed specifically for Linguacious. When you use your smart device to scan the code, the app will speak the corresponding word in the correct language. Here’s the really cool part: the words are pronounced by native speakers to ensure accuracy!
My daughter loved helping me scan the codes, and she thoroughly enjoyed repeating each term. Since she’s still so young and happens to be a super picky eater, there were a few foods (such as mushrooms) with which she wasn’t even familiar in English. So I arranged the cards so that the foods she was most familiar with were first and the ones she was least familiar with were at the bottom of the deck. That way she wouldn’t grow discouraged by trying to learn the Spanish translation for something she doesn’t even recognize. She didn’t even bat an eye when we reached the difficult words. She loved every minute!
You might be wondering…who are these cards for? What ages are they for?
I’ve seen some other reviews mention that these cards would be great for homeschooling families. That’s certainly true as these cards help build and strengthen the foundation of language learning (vocabulary), as well as engaging kids in fun educational games. I would also say that these cards are for all children, no matter what their educational background. These cards would easily compliment public and private school language programs. I’d even recommend them for teachers to use in classrooms during formal language learning. If I’m honest, I’m a fully grown adult with a Master’s degree, and I loved playing with them! The cards are also compact enough to easily take on-the-go, which is an added bonus for families such as mine who travel often and have limited space.
What languages options are there?
According to their website, Linguacious currently offers playing cards and posters of various topics in an impressive 48 languages! This includes languages such as Mandarin, Arabic, German, French, Spanish, Persian, and Russian. There’s even an ESL option!
