Today is a special day. Today is our birthday. Let me explain:
When I first started dating my husband in November of 2010, my friends dutifully looked him up on Facebook – while he was in the room. I’m sure they were making sure he wasn’t a psychopath while simultaneously satisfying their curiosity. After all, he’d been on what I called my “do not answer list,” which really just meant that he would call with really tough questions on a regular basis and I knew to prepare myself when I saw his extension pop up on my Cisco phone. He had figured this out and started changing the extensions that he used to call. When I answered, he would say, “gotcha!” He was SO CUTE, but I completely missed all the signs until he boldly asked me out on Windows Messenger (think AIM for offices…if you don’t know what AIM is, look it up on Wikipedia).
So there we were, watching a college football game as a group, eating huge helpings of “wings and things” while my friends stalked him on Facebook (as good friends do). One of them whispered, “did you know you guys share a birthday?!”
Since then God has blessed us beyond measure and we have shared so much more. We’ve moved around the country and added two beautiful children to the mix. I know the phrase gets used often and may seem a little trite, but I honestly cannot imagine living life without him.
He is my rock, grounding me and loving me when I feel like life is starting to spin out of control.
He is my helpmate, always ready with good ideas and a willing, helpful heart.
He is my best friend and confidante, sharing my joy in the good times, and holding and praying over me when times are tough.
He is my champion, standing up for everything that is pure and holy and just.
He is my hero, putting his life on the line regularly and working hard to provide for our family.
He is my favorite person in the whole world, and I pray that today and every day he knows that he is the most incredible gift God has ever given me.
He is the reason I am so grateful for January 26th every year. He is the reason I reflect every year on the fact that thirty-something years ago, God brought two people into this world whom He would eventually bring together to change the world in a million little ways.
So for my first “favorite things Friday,” I wanted to share with the world my favorite person. It is the sincere and earnest prayer of my heart that God would draw us closer together and give us many more decades of birthdays together.
Thank you, God, for my husband, for the man that he is and the family we’ve built.
Happy birthday, my love. I love you more.
